Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki was a nice little day town to stroll around in.  Once again, we got a bit of rain but this time we toughed it out instead of drinking undercover.

This city has no medieval past. Before the 1800's, Helsinki was no more than a village.  When the Russians took over (originally, Sweden had been in charge), they moved Finland's capital to Helsinki. It was then designed to look like St. Petersburg (stone buildings of yellow and blue pastels with white trim and columns).

The obelisk in the centre of the market. It is of a double-headed eagle which represents imperial Russia.

We took our trusty Rick Steve's book along for tour. Here I am trying to figure out where to go.

Look familiar? This is a church modeled after St. Isaac's in St. Petersburg which is modeled after St. Peter's, St. Paul's and the Duomo. Go imperial Russia with your creativity!
We were once again joined by our American friends in Helsinki!
Shea saw this wall and got us all to pose like we are climbing it.
I think the best part of Helsinki was the walk back to the ship along the coast.  The main area of town is nice but the peace along the water was breathtaking.

Can't remember what this is but it's a nice little house on it's own island.

Kate and Griff.

We found the Lord of the Rings Eye of Sauron!
Helsinki is great for a day visit. Not much more. It is a cute little town and the people are very nice.  There is just not much to see and do because the place is so "new" by European standards.
